Default Looking for parts/advice - J.C. Higgins 583.8

Hoping someone here can help me out a bit.

I found a J.C. Higgins 16 gauge bolt action ( model 583.8 ) and pretty much made a "spur of the moment" purchase while not knowing much of anything about the gun.

Get it home and break it down for a good cleaning only to notice something was definitely wrong. Couldn't for the life of me figure out how the gun could possibly transfer a shell from the tube to the receiver. Long story short, it can't.

In the diagram below, I believe I'm missing 7A, 7B, 7C, and 7D. Although, I believe the part I have marked as 7X is there. Anyone know if 7X and 7D are able to separate? This is the best diagram I could find but it is not exactly like my gun, mine does not have a place to put part 36 (nowhere for screws 35 to go) and my part 34 looks quite different.

Other than Numrich who is sold out, anybody know where else these parts could be obtained?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, the shotgun was made by High Standard. There was an incident involving injury to a shooter using a TWELVE GAUGE version, and Sears recalled the guns by buying back the bolts. As a result, there are a ton of boltless 12 g models floating around the market for a few bucks. The gun itself is long out of production.

Thanks c3.

I had read about the 12 gauge problem. Do you know if this carrier assembly is interchangeable between the 12, 16, and 20? I found a PDF manual for the gun that lists it as one part for each but Numrich has a different part number for each caliber.

Can't say for sure, but GENERALLY- if Numrich list different parts numbers, they are different. Go to the Numrich forums, pick one on ordering parts, and post a message for the staff. They are pretty good about getting back to you.

I've got one with the same problem. Picked it up as a project gun. Redid the stock. Numerich lists the part that we need but I have yet to see it in stock. I have it saved in their system so I can check on its status pretty easily.

The part # is 329840A. They list at $26.40.

Exactly the part I'm looking for, if I run across anything elsewhere, I'll let you know.

I would appreciate that. I've been waiting for one to be in stock for several months.
