I really like Mossberg's. I own two pumps and they go to the sporting clay course quite often while my more expensive guns are sitting in the safe. Lots of people rag me about them but somehow I usually get the last laugh. The Beneli is reliable but I am around a lot of $1800 Beneli's I don't have any experience with their pump shotguns. If you choose a Mossberg get a combo right off the bat. I would avoid the security models. Unless the gun is an 8 shot there is no magazine tube to hang a light on. The sporting models also hold six 3" shells. I am not sure the tactical Mossbergs will hold six 3" shells. Maybe someone who has a cruiser will chime in.

My mossberg 500 holds 5 + 1 for 3" shells and 6 + 1 2 3\4"

But it does matter what you are going to use it for.

Depending on your use there are great suggestions made in the post for any application you decide. Hd/sd mossberg 500/590 or 870 pump. I have a mossberg 590a1 8+1 20" barrel. I bought it strictly for sd/hd. Good thing because I can't switch barrels like the 500 or 870. So multi use I would pick one of those. It you just want an easy shooting shotgun for birds the used 1100 someone suggested would be an excellent choice.

I prefer autos - Baretta or Benelli are nice but $$$, if your going to shoot a lot, your shoulder will thank you.

Remington 870 sets the std for pumps - they come w multi barrel opts for $436 at Cabelas in CT.

The rattling forearms isn't a flaw really (at least to me, although I can see how it can be annoying) , it allows for looser tolerances which is why it's designed the way it is.
