I recommend the 870. I also suggest buying an after market recoil pad such as limbsaver, paclymer or Remington supercell pad because slugs out of an 870 will have a pretty good thump. You will be fine with fosters out of a smoothbore barrel. The 870 express comes with a mod choke. I wouldn't suggest using anything tighter than a mod choke with fosters. You might want to consider brennekes, those can be shot out of any barrel and any choke. They also are more accurate. For shotshells I recommend Winchester high brass magnum game loads. You can kill any game with that load up to turkeys at close range (25-30 yards). Hope this helps!

Remember, if you're shooting slugs, one has to be rifled. What I mean by this is if the barrel isn't rifled, you need rifled slugs. If the barrel is rifled, you don't want rifled slugs.

The Mossberg 500 was my first shotgun. They're fairly inexpensive and are great guns!

Try handling them both but if reliability and price are considerations I would buy a 500.
