Default Just got an 870 free now need help

Because I know nothing about new shotguns haha. Long story short, I took my whinchester semi auto to the gunsmith to get fixed because the mag spring was broken and it wouldnt come apart. Well, he broke the plastic mag release button on it and they couldn't fix it because it was stamped or something so they gave me a brand new in box Remington 870 Express. Well, this may be a dumb question, but whats the break in period and when I look down the bore its not smooth like my old one. Like it looks the same type finish as the outside. Does it smooth out the more you shoot it? I would imagine it just blasts it smooth more and more. Just wondering. Any pointers? Oiling? I know its the most popular shotgun on earth so yall should have someone here that knows. Thanks in advance and of course Im happy happy happy

You went from a Winchester to a Remington?
What model Winchester.?
Who is your gunsmith?

I wouldn't worry about the finish on the 870. If you're going to keep it just take it to the range and try to shoot it. See If it is going to function properly before worrying about breaking it in.

The inside of the barrel should be polished smooth. It may have some heavy oil for long term storage in it. You can get a bore mop or a bore snake that you can run through the barrel to remove that oil a d any of the dust it attracted while in storage. That should be done before you fire it. The exterior of the Remington Express guns is rough, because they bead blast the metal to give it a dull finish for less reflection when hunting.

I'm curios as well what model and year your Winchester may have been. There is a possibility that if it was in good cosmetic condition that it could be worth more than the Remington and it may be as simple as finding a used or NOS part from a place like Numrich. He did give you your broken Winchester back to you right?

Yeah he gave it back. Im pretty sure its a Ranger 140. Its around 200-300 online where Ive seen it. The pricetag on the 870 was 429 $. (I know thats marked up) He said it wasnt fixable. If it is, please let me know and Ill fix it.

try Numrich Gun Parts. here is a link and the schematic for your shotgun. and also find a better gunsmith.

Give the Rem. a good cleaning before you shoot it and the barrel should be fine. I'm glad to know he gave you the broken Win. back, I to thought there was something shady going down. Not much that could be broken on one that couldn't be fixed.

The Express probably just needs a good cleaning. Kudos to your gunsmith. I am betting he did not give away a gun if the other one was fixable.

If the Win. is only 2-3 hundred $ it might not be worth paying a smith to fix. But if you can get the parts for say $20 and fix it yourself its a pretty sweet deal.

Congrats on the new Shotty. Too bad about the Winny. Hope you can fix.

Anyway, swab out the barrel, and give other parts a coat of Oil, Rack Gun a half dozen times, wipe off excessive Oil, and shoot a couple Shots, swab out, give parts another coat of Oil/wipe down, Rack Gun 1/2 dozen times to help smooth things out, go and shoot 3 or 4 more shots, reswab, reoil, rack gun some more, wipe off, then go out and blast away.
One thing about the new 870. They don't like Short Stroking. They'll jam up every time. Be firm on your Pumps. After awhile, it'll be 2nd nature as to how the Express likes it. They are rough on the inside, but they do smooth out.
