I also suggest 00bk for home defence however past med distance even mag loads are unreliable at best. Military testing has shown that you need 3 of the 00bk pellets in center mass to cause effective damage for the guaranteed kill. Also look into Winchester pdx1-12 home defence ammo. Three 00bk pellets in front of a 1oz hollow point rifled slug, they also offer fragmenting slug variety.
+1 on those pdx1 rounds

Lol they're very nice. A chest size spread out of an 18" barrel all the wise out to 15 yards. The best of both worlds. Slug plus 00bk

I prefer the 15 pellet 3" Winchester Super X buckshot. People complain about the recoil from the full house load but when I am shooting a deer I feel no recoil. There is no way recoil is going to be an issue when someone is trying to take my life.

In and around the house #2 Shot MINIMUM, and otherwise anything up to #0 Buckshot.

Bullet9992, I agree about the smaller shot size like BB in and around the house, but you left out a critical bit of information re: the above quote -- range. That statistic for three impacts is for a distance of 35 meters!

Lol sorry i forgot about that. But the 3 00bk to center mass still stands as the standard for the kill shot. But yes, larger sized pellets are more prone to separation at distance & thy have less pellets per shell. But if you can contact with larger pellets they do more damage. It depends on situation, target, & distance. That's why there are so many different shell offerings

Those are largely energy/CNS-based calcs. At the same distance it would take about 9 #4 Buckshot hits to kill. Of course they are both about 1/3rd of the standard load and equally likely...
