Both, I imagine slugs would go along way in stopping an unwelcomed car roaring up the driveway. After that bucksshot.

And how would you know if the approaching vehicle's occupants were out to do you harm?

It's sh!t hit the fan scenerio partner. Every car or truck you don't reconize could be a threat. Do you have a hd gun? Does that mean you are going to hose anybody that comes to your door? Having the proper gun, with the proper ammo would greatly help in a given situation. I was just making a case for both loads. Besides if you are in a retreat, a closed gate would probably be sop.

Get some ghost peppers and mix them up with rock salt real good then pack them in the shell. If ghost pepper can deter wild elephant in India I think it will make anyone want to shoot themselves before u get a chance too. Lol.

I think some people underestimate the range of buckshot, they are heavy lead bb's and are capable of doing damage a a decent range providing u have a gun that throws them well. I like #4 buck myself has alot more bb's and seems to pattern well at farther yardage and the bb's are still big enough to do damage, but realistically if the shotgun is all you have you would want to keep some slugs on hand for the more extreme range, if you end up saving up and getting the AR like you plan, then I wouldn't bother with the slugs, just stock up on buck and keep the shotgun for close to medium range work. That's what I would do anyways, just my opinion. Someone mentioned some birdshot for game, that's not a bad idea either but I would rather have some sort of 22lr for that, its fairly quiet, accurate and ammo is very light, can carry a lot of it if u have to move.
