Bugging out is bad enough. Doing so with lots of big, heavy, comparatively weak shotgun shells as your main ammo is REALLY bad!

I am going to assume you are talking about shtf in a close quarters situation. For home defense I would use buck shot the same way we used it in the navy, with the intention to clear anything in a hallway or small room with little concern for anything else in that room. If you have any concern for anything on the other end of that muzzle then a sidearm would be the choice. Remember within 15 yards anything on the business end of that shotgun with buck shot is going to have a very bad day

DefaultBuckshot

If I HAD to choose? It's a shotgun: Buckshot.
Otherwise, as in real life, I'd have mostly #0 Buck and a few slugs (like a 15:1 ratio).

I used to believe that buckshot was worthless on deer. But, I worked as a taxidermist (many years ago) in northern Michigan and I skinned out many deer that were killed w/ 00 buckshot. I was amazed and impressed by how well the buckshot penetrated and how well it killed.

Of course it depends on what you're trying to do with it. Is the target soft or semi-hardened? A 12 ga. slug is sufficient for taking down a big-ass bear and would be somewhat of a overkill for an unarmored human. On the other hand, for vehicles and lightly armored targets slugs are great!

Most of what I have laid aside for SHTF occasions is 00-Buck. That's where a shotgun really shines in CQB. That said, I always have a few slugs close-at-hand as well should the need arise for something with more punch.

I would invest in a good rifle or an AR15 with conversion kits. I don't like the AR, M16, or M4 but they have several conversion kits readily available. To answer the main question I would carry 400 rounds for both slugs and buckshot.
