Buck Shot. It is more versatile.

If you hadn't mentioned having a daughter before, i would wonder a bit about 6000 rounds of buckshot.

The versatility of a shotgun is due in large part to the kinds of ammo you can load it with, from short sand-sized skeet loads to long big ol' slugs.

Yeah, I'd go with 0 Buckshot (you won't find it on the LGS shelf) and a small supply of slugs for when you might have to reach out.

I like the 00 Buckshot for close and rifled slugs for distance; ofcourse, need to pickup some more recoil-managed slugs for the wife.

I do need to at some optics to the 870!

If we are talking a serious SHTF scenario, hopefully you already have as much ammo as possible. If it is a circumstance where you have to bug out than a ratio of 60/40 of 00 Buck to Slug would be my choice.
If you are staying put than I'd keep about 70/30, 00 Buck to Slug. since encounters will probably be at closer ranges.
Make sure have plenty, since you have no idea when you will be resupplied.
Also don't forget the game rounds #6 or 7.
