IMO, just get both. Each has its own use, so use it accordinly.

That's not enough. You would need something for close-in defense.

A short barrel shotgun would be the best. A semi-auto pistol would be second best. Both would be ideal.

A long-range rifle would be in 3rd place.

Might be your 3rd choice but its going to be my first choice every time , Scoped AR 15 for 200-300 yard shots and back up sights for up close encounters
However speaking of shotguns , 00 buckshot here , Slugs do the job and you have more range but you got a little more area with the 00 than a slug . They both will do a wonderful job and the slugs will be much cheaper

I'd have to say 00 buck. Kind of hedges your bet. 000 buck is also available but theres less pellets in them unless you get 3-1/2" shells. I do keep slugs though for bears.

Okay shtf here is like a bug out scenario okay I get it now. like nuclear holocaest/ zombie apocalypse. Then any and all. A few of my friends have a bug out plan. Old 80s suvs with big tires with spares they have old trucks with big tires they with a few drums of gas and spare tires. Both have a vmm a .df a 12 and 20 ga shotguns. They said those were the most common rounds. And they have a few hundred of each round. So if you are preparing for that both rounds will come in handy equally.

If you are stocking up, why not both? I like a 4-1 ratio of buck to slug. I cast my own of both and load as fast as I can afford components. Nearly 6 K in buck at the moment. I was just loading some 10 pellet 00 buck tonight.

For me its split about 40/60. In my area slugs are more practical and cheaper, while buckshot is typically more expensive and harder to find. Both have their place, and its important you have both. What you need more of, only you know.
