So I've been looking at some shotguns recently. At first I thought I would go with the Mossberg 500:

But I heard some of you guys talking about Remington's shotguns so I checked this one out:
62447 - 12 Gauge Remington Model 887 Nitro Mag Tactical Pump-Action Shotgun 18-1/2" Barrel 3-1/2" Chamber 2-Shot Magazine Extension Synthetic Stock

They both have things that I'm looking for (matte blue finish, heat shield, high capacity tube) I'm just not sure.
I think I'm leaning towards the Moss. but the Remington looks so cool and already has Picatinny rails (I'm putting a light, vertical fore grip and red dot sight on it... I think) And yes I know it shouldn't matter how cool it looks as long as it does its job.
Let me know what you guys think.

Can't go wrong with either a Remmington or Mossberg. There is a reason why the military and police departments use both these makes of guns. Both very, very reliable.....so really you are back to how it looks.

I wish I could afford both; one for the wife and one for me. Unfortunately, we are poor a$$ college kids.

I forgot to ask, what is the actual shot capacity on the rem? The only thing I could find is it has a "2 shot extension tube." I assumed it was 8 but I'm not sure.

I'll need to make a trip to Cabela's to handle both and see how they feel to make the final decision.

The Remington 870 with the factory +2 extension is 6+1 for a total of 7 shots. The Mossberg 500 is 5 +1 for a total of 6 shots. The Mossbergs are not modular and are a big pain in the ass if you want to add more capacity.

This is my favoiret department when someone ask a question like this.

Remington 870s are a good gun. The only major problem is with their matte finish and blued finish. These will get rust on them so you need to be carefull with finger prints. Allthough any gun will get rust without proper care.

The Mossberg 500 is also a good gun. These are a very tough shotgun. Your 500's have plastic parts but I rarely hear people complain about them.

As for them both carrying total ammount of ammo it really does not make a difference. Mossbergs go from 6 to 9 shell compacity and I think remington is the same on that if im not mistaking.

One other thing that will be good to do is to try and shoot each one and see how it feels to you.
