Default How exactly do you use a shotgun? (Newbie question)

I've never owned a shotgun before. But I want to buy one for self-defense against bears when I go camping (I don't wanna kill for game. lol).

Whenever you buy a shotgun, is there like a manual that teaches you how to load it and shoot it? Is the process of loading and shooting a shotgun the same for all shotguns?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

There are a few different kinds of shotgun actions: break, pump, semi-automatic, lever...
They all load differently. A new shotgun will come with a service manual but most do not have instructions. You need a mentor. Try a local gun club or range. Or ask a competent friend or family member.

Go to a trap/skeet range a take some lessons. You will get advice on what to buy. In the meantime go to youtube and search shotgun shooting. Many videos there.
Get some practice before you buy. And practice often thereafter.

Don't buy one until you've tried a few. You want to find one that you can shoot comfortably and will serve the purpose you intend for it. Try to find someone who can teach you.

Well, there is a manual, and there are videos on youtube like "how to use a Mossberg 500" (not all youtube vids show SAFE operation, IMO). To me, it is the kind of thing you need a trusted mentor to show you how to do SAFELY.

Good luck with the bears; I hear slugs are best for them.

Best thing you could do right now is take a firearms safety class. You'll get most of the RIGHT information you need there.

Then you'll be able to go through the thousands upon thousands of hours of information available on YouTube and other places on the Internet and know what is real and what is crap.

Check out this site to find a good course in your area: http://www.nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx
