Thanks for all the info!! Lots of replies in a very short time frame.

Underfire, I am seeing a trend, and its following what little research I have already done on the subject. Apparently, Remington and Mossberg are the most popular being made today. I'm definitely not looking for anything flashy. A simple black SG will do me just fine. I saw one post mentioning not to go with a pistol grip. As I said, I have little experience with any long gun, but I would've thought a pistol grip would allow for a more comfortable grip with the wrist. However, I can see how a pistol grip on a shotgun could effect your swing if you needed to use it as a club for some reason. I'll definitely need to get a few in my hands before the final decision (which I'd planned on doing anyway).
Now, as far as the load. Since I'll probably end up with a Mossberg due to money reasons, what kind of load out do people recommend? Just from a tactical mindset, I think having the first round loaded with small shot, the next 2 or 3 being 00 or 000, and the last 1 or 2 loaded with slugs just in case the BG doesn't realize he's dead yet. Does that make sense or best to just load out with 00 or 000 and be done with it?

possumbarnes,

You're on the right track...
I agree, nothing "flashy", I would keep the HD shotgun simple.
Also, staggering rounds in the shotgun is fine if that's what you want to do.
Some do, and some don't...it's what works best for you.
A shotgun is the best home defense weapon, so you're headed down the right path. Good Luck!!

Think what you may... But if you notice, I haven't claimed a whole lot, so your imagination might be wandering

I was just putting it out there. I was not recommending the exotic ammo. No one need to shoot poison tipped darts, razor blades, or dual slugs for home defense.

To a point. But a beanbag or rubber rocket subdue all but the craziest, biggest, badazz, or someone high on Meth... And then you pull out the Smith and Wesson handcuffs.... and risk no jail time for saying the wrong thing.

Ok... Hi, I work for a Federal Law Enforcement agency. Ok? Point? No where did I say that I am a secret squirrel, mission impossible, undercover ninja. $hit.... I could be a paper pusher.... "Could" being the key word. But honestly, my friend, I am not hear to impress you. I am here for good deals on firearms, a little more knowledge, to share the little I have, and read hilarious stories about Tango the pixie fairy of love.

If I had a shotgun for HD (soon enough) mine would be loaded with one rubber rocket, followed by 4 rounds of 00 Buck...

on a serious note, the staggering of the shells in a sg is just people gettin fancy. all you need is a few rounds of "whatever you have around". buckshot is a sure kill, as well as 4 shot, but if all i had around was 8 shot skeet loads you bet your a$$ i'd use them. even a lesser size load at 5-10 feet will make a bad guy wish he never set foot in your house i promise.

that being said, i keep 3 inch 00 buckshot for my home defense, it just happens to be the best of "whatever i have around"
