Or a shovel. But why would you use a shovel or a bb gun when you could use a shotgun?

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Default home defense shottie

I have an 870, all dressed up with night sights, ghost ring, and long mag tube. That being said it was built for use as a patrol shotgun back in the day. For home defense I have and keep by my bed, a Mossie 500, also set up as a patrol gun with long mag tube and 20 inch barrel. The Mossberg feels right to me and the safety is where my thumb can get at it instantly. It also shoots slugs well in spite of the lack of sights, in addition to various buck loads, shot dept quals with it. There are some plastic parts (like the safety button) and that sucks.

A few years ago I bought a Rem ( Baikal ) Russian made SPR 220 12 GA double BBl shotgun. It has a 20" BBL with the Hammers on it ( Stage Coach ) type gun. I keep that loaded with #4 Buckshot. right next to my bed. "Works for me."

Someone tried to blame a tool when it was the user that made a poor choice in load.

The 12 pump is loaded with 2 #4 buck and 5 #00 buck. The 20 double is loaded with 2 # 3 buck with 4 more on the side.

If I recall it is the same as a standard 870 which is 4 or 5. I Only put 4 in a 5 cap mag if it is going to be stored 'ready' for any length of time. I am not sure if a side saddle for the 870 will fit an H&R.

Right -- that resin safety switch is the only weak link in the chain to me. Change it carefully as soon as reasonably possible.

Oh, and it's "Pardner." Get a Maverick 88.

I own a Rem. 870 and I would agree that the safety is not as good as it could be, but if you get an extended safety like I did, it upgrades the gun tremendously.
