You WILL sacrifice penetration when you fan your mass out over many projectiles. BB's maybe 5-6 inches. Disks, I would guess no more than 10" or 12" on the generous side. Realistically, it's probably more like 8"-10".

Rob Pincus claims the entire line meets the FBI minimum of 12" with the exception of the .380 Auto. I have my doubts.

One shotgun which is overlooked is the H&R Partner. It is copy of the 870. I have sold several and my brother has one. I am impressed with it and it is probably the best 'value' out there for home defense.

Jim, what is the magazine tube capacity of the Partner vs. the Maverick 88, and do we know where they are (mostly) made?

I have both the Maverick 88 and a 500. I like them both but, the 500 is my go to shotgun.

The H&R partner is made in China. It's better than nothing. It has a 5 shot capacity. The Maverick 88 is made in Mexico and assembled in TX.

And the basic Maverick 88 has a 6 shot capacity like the Mossberg 500, and there's an 8 shot basic Security model too, right?

My brother bought a Bond derringer. He loaded it with .410 buckshot for SD and snake protection. He shot a water moccasin twice at less than 10' not one of the buckshot hit the snake. He killed the snake with a stick. He got lucky and found someone who really wanted the bond. He traded it for a S&W 40 cal.

If one could find a Judge or Bond that fired a real 3 1/2" .410 shell I might have a look at one.

For snake i wouldve gone with smaller shot, 6 or 6 1/2 at the biggest from a 410.
