IMO opinion, if an intruder is hit at 20-40 feet either it will outright kill him.
I prefer the 12 as it may be somewhat heavier but that with helps felt recoil.
Someone might want to comment the recoil difference between a 12 ga with 2 3/4 loads vs a 20 with 3 inch loads. I'll bet they may be close and the heavier 12 ga might have an edge

All persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

This seems to be a pointless conversation. You are choosing between a cannon and a cannon that is slightly smaller to use inside a building. Either way you go, you are still going to have a cannon and I am sure either will be more more than effective. You could get s break gun with 2 barrels and flip a coin before you go to bed every night.

If your wife is going to be shooting id go with the 20. My wife shot my 12g once an now she won't touch the thing. Everytime I leave the house at night I'm stripped of my pistol because she doesn't wanna use the shotgun. Something to consider

I read that a 20 gauge is all that is needed for a HD firearm. I ordered a Mossberg 500 20 gauge for the range as well. If my wife ever decided to try, this should be plenty for her to handle.
