My wife and I have a Remington 870 Police Magnum with 8 Winchester PDX1 12 Defender 12 Gauge, 2 3/4in, 1150fps Velocity, 1oz, Rifled Slug, 3 Plated 00 Buck Pellets with a H&K USP .45ACP loaded with 13 Hornady .45 Auto 185 gr FTX Critical Defense rounds as a back up. This does not include my Springer 1911 or her Kimber 1911 that are our daily carry pieces. We practice scenarios on a weekly basis using blue guns and battle buddies as perps. We really do not know exactly what, where (except our home), when or how. For me, after all my time in the military, training is the key. What to do if... I also have fired the rounds through drywall and wood. Nothing is perfect and I realize that even with our planning, it all goes out the window the instance Murphy shows up, and he always does. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. I'm not saying these are perfect solutions in an imperfect world; I do hope I've put enough education and training together along with what I feel are the best tools available. The weapons are the last defense. A barricaded door and three different, independent communication sources to call for assistance are my middle-of-the-night-in-the-bedroom primary defenses backed up by devastating fire power. I pity the fool...

Do not use slug or buckshot, when was the last time you shot at someone in your house 10 yds./30 ft. away, my house is barely 10 yds. wide, let alone from room to room..........

Pan, there are two different 590A1 lengths and the 20" is an 8-round tube (like the original 590 (non-A1). Note that you can, and should, add a nice little extension -- at least the Vang Comp +1.

I've got my Mossberg 500 Crusader (or Pursuer) I'm sure Hocka will help me out. Plain jain and holds 7+1...with Hornady Critical defense 00 buck. I too have PDX rounds near.

Your house =/= his house. I'm sure he chose what he feels comfortable with using. I know in my house, the most I'd ever have to shoot is roughly 30-35 feet. And that's down a hallway into the kitchen. It'd be extremely hard to miss regardless of what weapon I choose. The most I'd ever have to realistically shoot is 3-5 yards (9-15 feet) . And that's even harder to miss, even when factoring in adrenaline and stress. Over penetration is honestly not a huge concern of mine. I thought long and hard about which load I should choose. For a while I was loading #6 birdshot. I did some testing, and found buckshot to be the best load for me. I want to stop the threat immediately, in the worst case scenario. And I've found that with using birdshot, I could not reliably do that. Yes people HAVE been killed with birdshot, but even more people have been shot with it and have lived to tell about it. Whether they were shot by accident or in a self/home defense situation. But as always, shooting someone should be the absolute last resort.

alot of people knock down the 00 buckshot for it's "overpenetration" and recommend birdshot for HD,but in all fairness 00 shot is a fat 36 cal and only 53 grains@ anywhere from 1100-1325fps depending on the load,I can't see that penetrating far,I'd much rather worry about the shot i'm trowing at the BG is going to drop him than the 1 in 100 chance I might hit someone in the next room.Think,if you don't put him down he's gonna kill you and everyone in the next room anyways.
