H&R 20 ga. single shot question
Does anyone out there have one? I'm looking to buy one with a modified choke and wood/laminate stock. Barrel length of no more than 26". I want it for pests in the yard and for my wife and daughter to have fun with. How do you like them? What will a new one cost me? Thanks in advance for any useful info!

I have the older TOPPER model . It is a youth combo I got from my dad and it came with the 20 ga barrel that you described and also a 30-30 barrel. The 20 ga stays on the gun and with a stock sock that holds 5 shells it is a great woods walking gun that is so light . Recoil isn't bad if you use field loads and my son when he was young filled the stew pot more than a few times. It really is a fun gun. As far as prices I,m not sure but I wouldn't pay more than $ 50.00 for a used one and I think a new one is around $100.00 or so. You might want to check out WM. Hope this helps . O.D.

Check here to get an idea of price, new and used:

BTW, the H&R/New England FA single shots are solid little shotguns. Nothing fancy, of course, but solid for an inexpensive gun.

Mine cost $99 at WalMart in 2005. Cylinder choke only. Nice shotgun for fun, very little kick. Probably perfect for wife and children. Buckshot is also available, as are slugs for more "social" uses....

You cannot by a better single shot shotgun. I am 64, I hunted with one as a kid, I still have it after dad died, it still performs flawlessly. Buy a new one, they as reasonable, and you will get the removable chokes with it, a plus.

I don't have the 20ga, but I love my NEF (H&R is the same) .410 (20 years old or more-new from K-Mart at $75, I think). Not fancy, but good wood grain and solid. I keep rifled slugs around usually for 3rd line.
Great for varmits, wife and kids. I've thought about getting the .20 ga for my son when he gets a little older. It will be his first hunting gun, most likely.
Price new should be $150-190 depending on chokes and all that are offered these days. Fwiw, the newer .410's come in .410 or .45LC. Nice guns that are easy to use and fun to shoot. Break down makes it a snap to clean and to teach to clean.
Robbo, my bro, get one.

Thanks to all. I'm going to buy one for $127.00 when wally world gets one. I can get all the shells I want for $5.00 a box. That's half the price or better than .410 ga. shells.

Heck, for $127.00, get me one too. Heck of a price that you will never feel bad about. Wally really has them at that price? Yes, it is single shot. Yes, you teach one shot one kill! Saaweeet deal, robbo!
Great post, robbo!

h&r nef single shot 20 ga.
I got one today for $117.00 plus tax at wally world in Bradley IL. Very nice and made in the USA!!! Thanks to all for your input. I'm thrilled about it and sometimes it's the little things like this that help you keep pushin' on.

My suggestion is to simply go buy a single barrel 20 ga shotgun. Since most are full choke, just have the choke reamed out to shoot a modified pattern.
