H&R 12 gauge question
I have an H&R singe shot 12 gauge Full choke shotgun.

My question: Can I shoot slugs with it?
I have been told that I can...others say no. I would like to know for sure.

Thanks - Tim

I have for years, mine was my first hunting gun. Sabot slugs, no, but your typical Rifled slug, no problem for me.

Did anyone say why you couldn't?

Not really....just said they didn't think I could. I just figured it would damage the barrel.

This is my first gun, I have had it for 30 years, bought it fo $50 new. I would like to deer hunt but haven't because of the slug issue.

You can use slugs in your gun with no problems. I suggest you stay away from magnum shells though.

Yes. Most commercial rifled slugs are dead soft lead and will swage down with no damage to the gun. Most of them are full bore size only at the very rear of the slug, they are hollow based so there is plenty of room for swaging. The "rifling" also makes room for swaging.

"Can" is far different that "will it work well?". Generally full chokes do not give the best performance with slugs. Yes the foster type slugs are virgin lean and VERY soft. They will swage down and probably not cause a problem with the gun. Accuracy will likely be poor, but ya might get lucky.

I was told (30 years ago) not to shoot slugs through my 870 30" full choke as it would expand the choke and I would lose the "full" in the choke. In hind sight it was an urban (or perhaps rural) legend and not based in reality.
