Default Fragile internals in a Mossberg 500

I'm trying to find some info but no luck. I keep hearing about 500's breaking from normal to heavy use, I'd like to find out what parts break so easily so that I might be able to replace them with 590 parts. And no I'm not going to buy a 590 istead. Anyone have any ideas?

The factory trigger group on the 500 is plastic and the lugs that hold the action in battery break after A LOT of heavy use. Mine broke after many years and hundreds of rounds of full power 00 and thousands of birdshot. I just replaced it with a metal unit from Brownells.

If I were to do it all over and bought another mossberg, I wouldn't even look at the 500. I would go 590 all the way. No take down screw on the 590 so you can put extensions on, more barrel choices for that same reason, metal trigger group, you can get a mariner in the 590 and all the stuff that goes on the 500 also fit the 590.

Thanks for the useful info. I like the 590 just not its price or its extra pound in weight. Looks like I will be looking for a new trigger group.

Sounds good, but keep in mind if you plan on the immediate upgrade, that trigger group is in the neighborhood of $85.

I don't mind, it's better than $500. I'll hate not having rifle sights but a I'll fix that with a flip over scope.

New 590's are about $500 in Tampa, Fl as well. Even the used ones go for $450.
