Default First Shotgun - choices.

So, I've fired my friends Benelli SuperNova. He got it for about 450$. Mossberg 500 Tacticals are about 350$.

And I've seen Remington 870's at the store for as low as 275$.

I plan to use it for hunting and home defense.

I am leaning towards the Mossberg 500 because of looks and the durability factor and just all around reliability. I heard it has some recoil.

870 is a classic choice, as anyone who has looked up anything about Shotguns knows.

As for the Benelli, I like it's feel somewhat, it has quite abit of recoil though, but it just doesn't feel right. Not sure, when firing it, everything feels like a chore. I haven't fired the other two though, so I can't comment. Just like the pump action of it requires some serious force, you have to apply pressure a second before it'll pump and release the shell. It has a Pistol Grip as well, at least the one he has does. Not sure if that was the reason for the sore shoulder.

Like to maybe get a rifle barrel for it later without costing an arm and a leg. My friend wanted to get one for his Benelli, but it was over 300$, the cost of another gun!

Peoples opinions on these three Titans?

Get whichever one looks and feels best TO YOU. Any of the three will outlive your grandkids with minimal care. We're talking pump guns, not Purdeys. They are a very efficient tool for many uses. The ability to swap parts and barrels enhances that. On that score the Mossberg and the Remington outshine the Benelli both on costs and availability, as you have already seen, so if that matters to you too act accordingly. Good luck.

For inexpensive aftermarket accessories and tacticool stuff, get a Remy or Mossy.

IMHO get the Remy and acquire at least two barrels, a 26 inch vent rib with Rem chokes and short barrel for HD.

I had my old 30 inch full choke cut down to 18.5 for HD.

A third barrel you may find handy is one for rifled slugs.

Any of the three you mention will kick like a mad water buffalo when you shoot 3 or 3.5 inch loads.

beings you want to use the same shotgun for SD and hunting, the best option is either the Mossberg 500 or the Remington 870 as you can easily change out the barrels for whatever use you need it for. sometimes you find the barrels at a decent price used on GunBroker.com or GunsAmerica.com gun auction sites. Brownell's and MidwayUSA both carry barrels new for both of these shotguns.

Have both the 870 Remington and a 535 Mossberg. and both are good. Both will last a lifetime. Both have all the accessories you could ever want. If you buy the Mossberg go with the 500 not the 535. The 500 has better barrel selection. The 535 will shoot the 3 1/2 mags but I doubt you will need that.

Mossberg sells the 500 in a kit with a home defense and a hunting barrel for less than $380. I prefer the mossy of the rem but thats just MHO.

another good choice is the Winchester SXP Defender with a 18.5" barrel and 5 shot magazine tube. paid about $370 NIB for mine. very reliable and has never failed me yet in almost two years of owning it.

I think since you want 2 jobs out of the same gun I'd go this route. There's no right answer tho here, go handle them an see what feels nice to you, that's the best choice.

The 500 or the 870.

And get the standard shoulder stock, if you value

your hands and wrists...

Link to such kit?

And finding a Mossberg without a Pistol grip! Tough! ALl the ones at my local gun store have them, might go up the road a few more miles to another I found out about.
