I have 4 Mossberg 500's that I love. I don't like the 870 express at all. I am a quick shooter and the 870 short strokes way to often to suit me. If a Mossberg 500 short strokes it needs repair.

CTOAU, I would suggest the 500, a Maverick 88, or the 870. All will do what you want it to do, and all of them are available as combos with a hunting and an HD barrel. All three have a decent aftermarket following, (The 88 is a less expensive rebranded 500) and all three, new or used with one or both barrels, are well within your budget.

Don't knock the 88. I had one for over 20 years that is now being used by a friend's son as his primary hunting shotgun. Lower cost doesn't a;ways mean cheap in a bad way. if I had to narrow the choices down to one, the 88 would be a strong contender.

Hope this helps.

I have a 9 shot maverick 88. For what I use it for it was well worth the money. It is usually beside my bed but it does see quite a bit of truck use. When hunting hogs with dogs the extended magazine is the slayer. Feral hogs are not considered a game animal in NC. Those 30 to 50 lb pigs fit on the grill perfectly.

I too recently just bought my first shotgun i bought the mossberg 500 combo for only 367$!!!! At big 5 it came with 2 barrels one 28" barrel and one 18 inch i recently went up against a remington 870 doing trap/skeet and my mossy won. with the two barrels, i have the ultimate versatility and have the ability to hunt any animal in north america. the barrels can be easily switched for home defense or the 28" barrel for going out hunting or trap/skeet. for only 367$ im very happy. shotguns are already as versatile as it is due to the different types of ammo. but with the combo barrels offered by mossberg it gave me the most bang for my buck i would recommend this for your first shotgun. some pieces on the Remington 870 can only be installed by the factory if it was ever broken. And alot of other shotgun brands arent as popular so parts and pieces will be harder to find/repair. im sure there is nicer shotguns out there but you cant beat a mossy when it comes to serviceability

Im too lazy to go and take pics of mine but i have the synthetic stock version

That is hardly a fair contest.
