I am saving up for my first 12 gauge shotgun - a remington 887 nitro mag with the 28 inch barrel. I want to buy some full power rifled slugs that won't kick as hard as others, any recommendations? it comes with a mod choke, is that ok for slugs or should I get a new choke?

I will probably leave the original stock on it because the rem 887 nitro mag is so weather durable.

I could be wrong on this, but i don't use slugs in my modified choke mossberg. Can you screw out the modified choke tube and use an open choke on that shotgun?

If you are looking for a deer-hunting slug slinger, consider one with a rifled barrel designed specifically for slugs, for more accuracy (with slugs, it will cast a donut with shot).


I am not personally familiar with a "reduced recoil" slug shell; maybe somebody else will speak on that.

It looks to have a removable choke tube, so you could swap it for a less restrictive tube like their spiffy-looking "tactical cylinder bore" tube.

887...do some research first. The Pump hand grip covers the load port when it is racked all the way to the rear. Extra shell saddle will not fit unless you cut the hand grip to shorten it, I like the slide release location but it catches and doesn't always allow you to slide the grip to the rear and no accessories are made for the gun as of yet. New buyer myself and looking to trade it without even fireing it for a 870.... Just my opinion. Other than those items it is a nice rig.

I thought about getting the rifled replacement barrel that came out 1/2-1 year after remington actually came out with the 887. But I'm really noise sensitive and the 20" slug barrel would be alot louder than the 28" barrel that is already on the gun.

Definitely do some research on the 887. Lots of unhappy customers. Failures to eject. Failures of the mag follower. Google Remington 887 problems, or 887 failures or 887 reviews.

Perhaps a tried & true 870 or even a good ole Mossberg 500 would satisfy you with the addition of a nice cerakoting? I believe CCC in the vendor's section offers that service. I believe Mossberg still offers some anti-corrosion coating or other on one of the 500's.

I have shoot one 887 in my life and I hated it....it kicked like a mule, it felt very awkward, plus I have heard they rust very badly under the polymer on the barrel....as far as the modified come you are perfectly fine...in my experience a modified shots better than any other for tube including a rifle choke tube..
Yes the do make reduced recoil slugs but you aren't going to get as much knock down power with them....in my opinion I would just use regular 2 3/4" slugs
