Default Different Russian Slug

Russian ammo manufacturers are taking advantage of US ammo manufacturers reluctance to expand and they are coming into the mainstream market. Here is one of the Russian offerings for shotgun only states and CA. The slugs are made of steel and expand much quicker than our top of the line sabots. I do have questions about accuracy and range. The Russian idea of accuracy and mine often are widely different. This slug is made by Ddupleks.

There are several videos on this page. One is a ballistic clay test. Another is pig that is gut shot but he still drops instantly. Really the gut shot doesn't impress me that much. An adequate hunting rifle or just a plain old rifled slug will do the same thing with shock instead of splintering.

I have seen bear in NC that weighed 350 to 400 lb. The bear that the Russians drop instantly is much larger than any bear I have seen.

This slug is also a player in the police and home defense market. Since it splinters over penetration is not an issue. But it may lack the barrier destruction abilities that police demand from shotgun slugs.

These have been out for a while now.

They might make a good standoff munition for tactical shotgunners. They just seem NASTY, and like they would create and even parger wound cavity.

I agree; pure hype. Perfect design to separate the gullible from their money.

Doessn't have enough weight to reach out there. Shotguns have realtively low velocities except for a few broaching the 1800 fps level. At that point a heavy slug is about like a .50-110 and will do the job on whatever it hits with a rainbow trajectory.
For desstruction i would favor the explosive loaded slug. they used to be available but I never bought any, just for curosity collection.

Looks interesting. i may pick up a box to do some independent testing, but for hunting\HD I'll stick with lead. It has worked well for a few hundred years, so I see no need to change now.

Once I figured out how to convert the weight of the slug it is a weak load. A Walmart special 12ga 3"1 oz plain old rifled slug has a velocity of 1700 fps. Hornady SST sabots have a velocity of 2,000 fps. Winchester XP3 sabots have a velocity of 2,200 fps.

If the DDuplek slug had a full charge of powder it's velocity would be much more than 1,500 fps.

Smaller frontal area, less prone to deformation.....I'd like to see penetration tests at 50 yards.
Designed to be fired from smoothbores, it might be a 50 yard max type of deal by their reckoning.

BTW, their 3 inch mags run 1575 to 1770 FPS.
