Default Cowboy Action shotguns

I started SASS with a 97 Winchester copy. I've since aquired an 1899 built Winchester 97, an 1887 lever shotgun copy & a Colt hammergun reproduction. The lever shotgun gives style points, but it takes a lot of practice to shoot well. The hammergun is made by TTN and is a pretty good gun for cowboy shooting, the hammers are easily cocked with one swipe of a thumb. More shooters are going to double barreled shotguns over pumps in the past few years. Top picks for hammerless shotguns are the BSS & SKBs. Those that have them swear by them, but they are over $1,200. My wife has 3 original 97s and likes what she has. I tend to switch guns and enjoy mixing it up.

I used to shoot SASS back in the day (My old number is only 5 digits) and I used a Stoger 20ga Coach Gun SxS which was pretty much the gun that ruled the range back then. Then the high speed shooters entered the game and the 97 became king. I hate to think how many perfect original 97s got butchered for SASS. The price of an original 97 shot through the roof!!! Funny how things come full circle and now the SxS are making a comeback.

Becaus of that it seems like the prices on 97s are somewhat back to normal and I was able to buy an all original in pretty good shape for $250 a couple of years back. Love that gun and I'm glad no one cut that beautiful long barrel down for gaming...

Nope, The only pump allowed is the 97 and clones. The 93 and 93/97 hybrids aren't legal either.

Hey Bog,

For SASS your shotgun must be from the 1800's, the remington was from 1908, sorrry.

The Spencer isn't legal either but the Ruger Old Army is. It must be nice to make your own rules.

I have found a lot of the rules in SASS are "odd" at times. It seems to depend on if your a "Purist” or “modernist” I guess.

I just bought a Ruger Vaquero, planning to start up a collection to maybe get into competition next year. I already do IDPA, and have all my guns to do 3 gun. This is getting expensive...fun...but very expensive. Thank God I reload!!!
