Default Can you go hunting with a 18"-20" barrel?

I am looking into buying a shotgun for home defense / hunting i saw a mossberg 590 at big 5 it looked really attractive but the barrel was only 18"-20" long so i dont know if it accepts chokes i would like to be able to hunt anything in north turkey, elk, bear, rabbit, duck, or whatever the 12guage is very versatile but will the barrel affect hunting ability? Should i just buy the mossberg 500 that comes with a security/ field ,combo set? Its two barrels and cheaper than 590

If the 590 accepts choke tubes that is all you will ever need for any game out there

Many people are looking to buy a 'slug' type barrel for their shotguns, and are dumping their 'duck' barrels. You could probably pick one up real cheap for hunting. And keep the short barrel at home or on the range. 28 inch vented Remington, an Mossberg barrels around here are selling for 50-80 dollars.

This is what I did with my 870. I found a field barrel for $80 at my LGS to supliment the deer barrel it came with. I say go for the 590, and check to see if there are any field barrels at your LGS, or on Armslist. Any model 500 barrel in the same gauge will work on the 590, and you wind up with a heavier duty shotgun that way.

Edit: The only other concern with the 500\590 barrels is the magazine tube. A 9 shot barrel will not work on a 6 shot model, and a 6 shot barrel will not work on a 9 shot model. When you go to check out the offerings, bring your shotgun with to check the fit. As Akers said above, if it is set up for choke tubes, you are set. If not, here is another idea, In a word, Polychoke.

I have an 835 that came with a stock 18.5. Turkey, clays, birds, squirrel, other varmints....great for all! Go for it!

I like the shorter barrel shotguns. They are fun to mess around with at the range, the one downside is they are LOUD! My dad has an 870 combo with the 20" slug barrel and it's high pitched compared to the 26" field barrel which sounds similar to his 30-30 marlin. When I'm at the range I wear doubles, when I'm hunting I just use plugs.

Sure. I go turkey hunting with a 20" barrel every season.

However, you'll want a longer barrel for any sort of wingshooting. They swing much better and that's important for shooting moving targets.

Get the 590 if you want a dedicated HD gun. If you want one gun to do it all, you'd be much better off with a 500 2 barrel combo.

I keep thinking about replacing my 18 1/2" barrel with this....Thinking my H.D. gun would see a lot more use that way.

If you had a standard barrel and this one it would pretty much set you for critters on the ground & H.D. then swap to the longer one for wingshooting.

I have four barrels for my Browning BPS: 20, 26, 28, and 32-inches. The three longer barrels all have the old style invector choke, and the 20 is a slug barrel.

I also have three stocks for it. So I can do just about anything I want to with it.

I bought two of them off eBay, they are allowing barrels to be listed again.
