Personally, I'd take a deer with a slug, not buckshot. If you're intent on not using a slug, go with 00.

You want slugs for deer. I wouldn't hunt deer with buckshot even if it were legal in Illinois. Your range for penetration would be very limited whereas a slug you're looking at 75 yards or so.

It depends on the barrel. Some shoot buckshot very well in modified choke. Take both the IC and MOD choke tubes and try them out at the range.

If slugs are prohibited in your hunting area, use at least 00 buck and limit your range to hopefully inflicting a cruel wound.

2.75" Buck shot
OO Buck and use Full choke. Unless you are stalking in brush and expect close in shots.

Try both 00 and 000 on paper first.

Fedreal Flite-Control 00 patterns tight with the more open chokes.

Anything over 35 yards, I'd use a slug.

Here's another vote for the Federal shells with Flite Control wads, they sure make some nice tight groups with OO buck out of my cyl. bore 590.

If I were after deer and could only use buckshot I'd use Dixie Tri-Ball (3- .60 cal. balls @ 300+ grains each). Legally they're still considered buckshot.

They only come in 3" + 3.5" though.

If it were legal, my first choice would also be slugs.

buckshot to use
Go to Dixie Slugs and look at their tri-ball load. You say you want 2 3/4" but you have a supermag which is 3 1/2 " and can shoot all 3 sizes. If this load is for hunting then the Tri-Ball load is the way to go. 3- .60 dia. balls @ 1300'/s
Search the back posts and you may find some old posts showing the accuracy of this load.
