Well, I just went out in the back yard to see for myself. 2 rounds of 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch #4 shot, 10 feet, one 4"X4" post tore in half. That post was close, but that pressure trated lumber is a lot tougher than my fresh.
I'm sticking with my 4 shot.

After your repeated cries of how buckshot is the best, I have devised my own way of using larger.....shot without the worry of overpenetration. Tell me, what would you use?

Buck Shot Vs. Grenade

Buckshot

Grenade

I will say it again here, birdshot is for birds that is why they call it bird shot.

Atlas Ammo makes a 12 guage round with both buckshot and birdshot inside. They also make some other "exciting" combinations.

Default HD Rounds

Our Police department uses #4 Buck in all there shot guns, I travel alot and ask other officers what they are useing and 9 times out of 10 the answer is always #4 buck, with the rest being some sort of buck shot load, I'm guessing all of these departments have done extensive testing as to what works best on bad guys from a shotgun, I'm sure in speacial situations where there is some sort of medium that would require a little more a$$ to get to the bad guy they step it up to something a little bigger, but as a rule I think the #4 buck is there primary round of choice, so that is what I use for home defence, I bought a few boxes of 3 1/2 inch #4 Buck the other day to restock the 3 inch ones I use for turkey season, I loaded my Benelli Nova and steped out back to test drive them, man those things put the kick back in shotgunning!!!
