I am saving up for a 12ga shotgun and I have been looking at a 887. I plan to shoot rifled slugs (Winchester value pack) but I don't know what the maximum barrel length I should use for slugs. I am kind of noise sensitive so I don't want a really short barrel. The shortest I am comfortable with are 21" for a 20ga and 26" for a 12ga. I prefer a 28" barrel but if I use a long barrel the slug will loose speed and energy because the powder will be burned up before the slug leaves the barrel. Any advice will be appreciated.
I use a 21"12 gauge barrel and I don't see any difference in the sound but a 28" would do just fine it would very little or no velocity at all.... but I would check other guns out besides an 887 they don't have very good reviews also in my own experience they haven't performed well....if you are set on a gun like that look at the benelli nova they are 10x the gun as a 887 but also check out the Winchester super x pump or an older used Winchester 1300 you should be able to find then at pawn shops for around $250 that's what I use and they are hard to beat....but basically almost any "name brand" pump gun is gonna be better than that 887
