Anyone tried 12ga Critical defense ammo?

I saw this at teh local gun store and noticed it was a reduced recoil load featuring 8 pellets of 00 buck with a "VersaTite" wad. Wondering how well it compares to Federal Flite Control in patterning. I can't seem to find the Federal 00 or new #1 Buck loads anyhwere locally.

The stuff I'm seeing on the Federal #1 Buck Flight Control patterning looks pretty amazing.

The versa tight wad is a Flightcontrol wad, relabeled.

Good to know. Thanks.

Cool, they say Federal patterns a little tighter…maybe the pellets are harder, I have never done a side by side with those two.

How many pellets does the #1 buck have?

For the distances involved in most defensive shotgun use, any 00B is critical defense. In the same room with you, bird shot is critical defense. The shooter's skill is far more important than the load.

I tried both the critical defense and a regular remington 2.75" 00 side by side at 25 yards in an unchoked gun to see the difference. The remington hit 6 of 9 pellets on my 30" paper and the ones that did hit were about in a 24" pattern. The hornady hit all 8 of 8 pellets on paper, most were in a 12" group but it had a couple flyers at 24".

#1 buck load has 15 pellets. It increases frontal surface area of a permanent wound channel by up to 77 percent over 00 buck and still meets minimum FBI penetration standards.

Specifically asking about Hornady Critical Defense line of ammo. Not all shotgun loads are created equal even at HD distances. Bird shot is not reliable enough across many variables.

this is how it starts.
