Bought a mossberg 500 brand new last week i haven even shot it yet, on the left side of the receiver there is like a strange square thats etched into the blueing its not really noticeable until you look at it in the light does anyone else have that? and on the right side Of the receiver near the takedown pins there are little scratches or pits it looks like someone was trying to jam a pin in there, but all around the hole. not noticeable till you put it in the light. also when i cleaned the barrel out i ran several patches through the barrel and they all came out very dirty then i ran solvent with a brass brush to get everything out and ran another patch it was still pretty dang dirty.and it looks like the brass scraped up my barrel a tiny bit. When i looked down the 28 inch ribbed barrel i can see the weld marks all the way down the barrel where the ribs are connected to the barrel, ill post a pic of the ribs if you don't know what im talking about. the twin action bars one the fore grip had pitting in them too. after reassembly which took me about half an hour to learn i grabbed my mossy to inspect it, then my stepdad brought out his 3 year old remington 870 we compared the two and the mossy looked a bit older even though its new.i did not like the blueing on my mossberg, the 870 had a nice parkerized metallic finish mine was shiny and black when pumping the action the 870 felt a lot smoother and seemed to glide the 500 was a little gritty and would go sshhhhhkshhhhhhk 870 would go coooockcoooook the 870 was easier to take down and reassemble and also there was no pitting and it was smooth it was also alot heavier and thicker so now im kind of jealous he said my mossy sucked and it was low quality but my mossy has dual extractors and it weighs less but the quality of my mossberg 500 was medium low quality compared to the remmy it seemed high quality. is my 500 a bad lemon from the factory? Or do they all come like this? I like my mossberg and its more of a go too war gun then a tight tolerance a clay shooter in my opinion. tuesday i will be going up against his 870 with my 500 to shoot clay. Please tell me is everyones mossberg like this? Im proud of my mossy its more of a manly man gun i guess but the qaulity is a bit low compared to his 870.

Contact Mossberg with your concerns and ask if they will fix the problems. Yours is definitely not typical for a new gun. I would say that the 870 might be a shade smoother out of the box, but not that much different. Mossberg should take care of you and I wold also talk to the FFL dealer that sold it to you. Maybe it sat a long time out of a safe or something that affected the finish.

Usually Mossbergs are a little rough until the rivets in the forearm assembly wear in. As far as the finish goes anything could have happened. I wouldn't buy a new gun and complain about the finish after the purchase. I either like what I see or I leave it in the store.

The finish is fine its not even noticeable until you hold it to the light but there is a strange rectangular square thats etched into the bluing on the left side of the receiver it looks kinda like if there was a sticker that go peeled off heres a pic hold on.

Go to the store, pick up a few boxes of ammo.
Stop looking at it and shoot the damn thing.

I'm not sure where you bought that Mossberg but it looks like somebody has messed with it some. The scratching around the pins and the odd discoloration of the receiver make me wonder if it wasn't either sold and returned (and the buyer had tried to do some takedown without proper tools and removed stickers) or it was done by someone in the store. No, a Mossy doesn't come with the build quality of a Holland & Holland but what you have is not typical of what they would allow out the factory door. I think you need to (!.) talk to the store you bought it from, and (2.) notify Mossberg about your reservations. It would also help to have good, clear, properly-focused pictures of the problems and you can't get that with a phone-cam. Surely you know someone who has a decent camera and the skill to take the kind of pictures that will illustrate your case. Without that kind of evidence you may not get very far with your complaint. Good luck.

Its a damn mossberg my warhorse i like it maybe i was just jealous of the 870? :) i say the remington 870 is more like an ar and the mossberg 500 is kinda like an Ak in the shotgun world or should i seriously take it back? Does anyone have pics of their new mossberg?
