Hi, my dad gave me his Western Auto Revelation 12ga pump (R310AR) that he bought I think in the 60's or 70's. I have looked around online and I guess it was made by Mossberg and is equivalent to their 500AB. It originally had a fixed full choke but he had a gunsmith bore it out to a modified. My question is: what kind of ammo can this gun handle besides lead? He has been shooting Hevi-Shot (not the classic doubles) through it for several years and I can't see any obvious damage. Does that mean I can use steel as well or should I stick with something like hevishot classic doubles for waterfowl? Thanks much for your advice!

You can shoot any 12 gauge ammo that is the correct length.

Maybe. Most of what I'm seeing says no on steel shot in Mossberg
500's with C-Lect-Choke or fixed choke barrels.

BS on the fixed choke barrels and who cares on the C-lect choke barrels.

These guns were made before the advent of steel shot. The old C-lect shot and fixed chokes will be damaged by steel shot. The barrels bore is too soft for steel shot and will be damaged. Stay with lead shot no point in damaging a family gun.

If your thing is duck hunting and you want to use the revelation, borrow a Mossberg 500 barrel. There is a very good chance it will fit. If it does fit get a modern barrel on ebay or whatever your favorite way of finding used parts might be.

That would be a good idea. I think however aii the Revolation shotguns were High Standard not Mossberg.

OK, so the general consensus is that the steel shot will harm the barrel... It's all just confusing because I was under the impression that the hevishot was even harder and denser than steel shot and the gun has had lots of that pumped through it with no visible damage (my dad refuses to shoot steel for waterfowl).

@nitestalker I got the Mossberg info from http://www.gunpartscorp.com/CrossReference.aspx If you look it shows the Western Auto 310AB as the Mossberg 500AB.

I really appreciate all the feedback from you guys but still don't know what to do haha!
