Default advice on shotguns.

Looking to buy a 12 gauge. Was thinking of the mossberg 835. Good idea or should I look at something else.

Mossberg is pretty good. You might take a look at the Remington line of shotguns. My personal favorite is benelli

Indeed. What will the SG be used for? Also, are you considering a particular 835 model?

Stoeger M3500. Last shotgun you'll ever need. If you don't need the 3.5" chamber of the 3500, the Stoeger 2000 is a screaming deal too.

Stoeger also just came out with a m3000 which is identical to the 3500 just in 3" chamber and about $200 cheaper

Benelli's are great gauges but a little out of my price range. I just plan on doing some clay shooting every now and then. But mostly for home protection.

For home defense go mossberg 500 or a tactical remington 870, if its for clays as well IMHO the remmington is the better choice
