Default 500 inconsistencies

I have a rifled barrel iron sights Mossberg 500 think it a 18 or 20 inch barrel and I love the gun first one I ever owned and have shot a lot of game with it. I have been having an issue with ammo shooting differently out of it from one day to the next I plan on putting a scope on it this season but was wondering if there could be a cause for this? Firearm is rather new only 9 or so years old and has no obvious barrel defects. Tried hornadys litefields and federal sabbots all shoot inconsistent. Thanks for any help

Back in the Day, it mattered whether your barrel was the rifled 20" if you were planning on using slugs. Does you barrel have visible rifling? Does it have a bead sight or rifle-type sights?

Edit* I just saw that you specified your barrel is rifled, my bad. I would make sure the slugs you are using are designed for that type of barrel first.

Sights aren't loose, right? Well cleaned (melted plastic in the tube)?

Yea I clean it pretty regularly sights seam tight all the time idk what it is I've thought about getting barrel checked out professionally but haven't done it figured I'd get some opinions out of all you and appreciate it. I thought maybe I was putting to much oil in it but have recently started running a dry brush thru it before I shoot doesn't change sometimes shoots great sometimes shoots awful....

You are only finger tightening the barrel onto the gun, right? No wrench!?

It isn't required and would put undue stress on the barrel if you overtighten it -- there is a small gap between the end of the mag tube and barrel stud.
