A magnum slug loading should take out any animal on our planet at a reasonable distance. They are devastating!

I have seen a couple dead elk from 3" 1oz rifled foster......enough that I started carrying mine for real brushy elk hunts that I know shots are going to be 50 yards or less......they flat work awesome for this and elk are big mean animals.

When I was in Alaska the 12 gauge slug was THE defensive choice. I spent 2 weeks on wildfire spike camping. The protection made available to us through the Alaska State Forestry warehouse system was Mossberg 500's and the only ammo choice was slugs.....these people been doing this for a long time.



We would get transported up and down rivers, Alaska roads, and all the boat drivers packed shotguns….yep with slugs
Anyone who says they don’t use them is purely for personal preference, those who say they won’t work have no exp with dangerous animal country

12 gauge slugs will beat the a$$ off ANYTHING within their EFFECTIVE RANGE regardless of the wild animal involved ANYWHERE on our planet!

legally, you CAN'T hunt dangerous game in Africa wihtout a backup man and a big rifle in his hands. guys take those big critters with .44 mag pistols, muzzleloaders, bows and arrows. If your shotgun slug penetrates all the way thru an elk, you will be ok with it on African buff, but not elephant, given careful shots at the ribs, from nearly a 90 degree angle, avoiding the shoulder bones.

and since you mentioned it, I am sure the slugs didn’t go through the elk, but they were dead. The sabots might go through but the fosters didn’t

If this was true, everyone would be lobbing shotgun slugs at African game....... but they aren't, because they're inadequate.

This being said, there's a popular feller who took the African big 7 with a 270. Don't try this at home kids. Its not a game. Use the right tool for the job.
