Learn something new every day! Not owning a true hunting rifle (not yet, anyway), I figured one day I'll get to try out my Mossburg 500 with the 22" rifled slug barrel. Sighted it in at the range and figured it would be a good hunting weapon from 50 to 150 yards. Now I'm realizing I don't want to try to shoot anything beyond 150 yards due to drop in penetration power. Good info!

I would take shots no farther then 100 my goal would be 50 yards
I want to know what I can hunt with a 73.cal 870gr sabot slug out of a 24" rifled barrel

A winchester dualbond slug is pushing 3400ftls at the muzzle but it's a 50.cal 375gr slug

whitetail or mule deer sized critters would be the upper limit of a slug's ethical humane hunting limit in my opinion

its not really the slug speed and wight thats the issue its the design. like canebrake said it drops energy stupid fast. on bigger critters like bears moose elk any real distance past 25-50 yards and its a crap shoot if it will get to the innards with enough energy. it acts just like a hollowpoint and hollowpoints are terrible for hunting anything.

Jon, I think if you check a chart some 12 gauge loads exceed the recoil of the 458 win and Lott. I've shot several African rifles(and you can tell when they go off!) but those darn 12 gauges also kick something awful. I think this 12 gauge round would have a very very limited application(I can not think even what it would be). This round is a typical answer to a question that was never asked.

No, I use the Remington Premier Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded Sabot slugs in my Mossberg 500 24" slug barrel with integral scope base. Remington recommends that you zero your slug gun at 150yds when using these slugs to get the most out of your gun. I have shot these slugs out to 200yds with only about 3" drop when zeroed at 150yds. This 385gr slug is moving 1900ft/sec at the muzzle Remington says it is the flattest shooting slug out today. It is a great slug for deer or any other large animal.

It would take it down but it would most likely take more than one shot.
Even high power rifles take two or more shots unless you hit the right spot.
