In my opinion Deer and turkey and other types of birds. Shotguns are just not good big game guns.
Bear are typically shot at very close range when hunting out of a tree stand. Police in alaska use 12ga on bear because its what they have for other purposes. Its often at very close range or used to make noise to scare a bear off or put down a moose wounded by a car. They arent hunting with them.
Personally i wouldnt use a shotgun even on small black bear. I dont think its ethical or humane as slugs just arent good at penetrating thick hide.
