You're talking to a bunch of people who don't give a flying sheep sh!t what the libs and others think about how our firearms look or what names others give them. It might be tough to get people to get into your mode of thinking. If you end up using ANY firearm for defense you will be in trouble, hell sometimes you just get in deep six by defending yourself.

Get what you want and don't worry what other people think of you, just my opinion.

The Mini-14 is called a "Ranch Rifle" at least you'd get away from the SUR look of an AR-15. If you're really worried about looks get a Mosin Nagant.

Default Semi auto with punch?

Id suggest a Marlin Camp .45acp carbine
Or a Hi-Point carbine in .45acp
a Ruger Deerfield .44 or a classic.44carbine (3shot)

for a larger rifle I'd suggest a Browning BAR in .243winchester or 7mm-08.
Winchester model 100 in .308winchester.
Remington 7400 in .30-06

another option is the tube fed pump
a few years back taurus had reintroduced the Colt lightning pump action in .
45colt

I'd settle for a Rossi Puma carbine in .44mag to go with a old 6" ruger blackhawk also in .44mag good to shoot as far as your eyes are good for.

Yeah but if you put on a white hat then it becomes a good guy
my opinion get a ak 47 or a ak 74 with a 30 round mag and your good to go of course if you allowed to have 30 round magz

The pistol cal carbine isn't a bad idea for a budget deal if you can share ammo. hi-point 9mms in an ATI stock are nice. so is the ruger PC-9, if you can find one. Those will take any aftermarket p89 mag up to 30 rds. they come in 9mm and 40 cal.

ryevick, welcome to the wild world of guns.

Rent, shoot, and try, try, try, before you buy.

Go to the range with your friends and try their guns.

You'll find something which speaks to you.

And don't worry too much. Two facts you should remember:

1)-It's a statistical fact civilians shoot better than cops.-

2)-Criminals are more afraid of armed civilians than cops.-

Too right, dude!

We'll never change an anti's mind, no matter what we do. But we CAN get

our friends to join the NRA, and get our second amendment rights back.

Will someone kill this word! WTF is tactical besides black and higher capacity. It is a mall ninja word that found its' way into real firearms. Holy F@ck. The Tactical commercial firearm is nothing but a pig dressed for the prom, not the royal ball. I guess I should paint my rifles all back and sell them as Tactical arms to wanna be'. None of these are tactical, but they are bad @ss in there own right!

The gun that strikes me as the best fit for the OP is probably a Saiga rifle, a modern make "sporting version" of the AK47. They're available cheap, have a solid track record, and can be converted to a more tactical style easily enough as they're supported by a ton of aftermarket products. You can get them in 5.56 (AR round), 5.45 (AK74 round), or 7.62 (AK47) here for $349-399. And they often also have them in 308 for around $500 I think.

The $400 Marlin 336 30/30 is also a fine option in the under $500 category.
