Default What's A Decent Rifle That Uses Cheap Ammo?

Looking to get a decent rifle for home security that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to take to the range. I have been looking at 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 5.8x42, 6.8x43, 6.5x38 rounds because they seem to be a good mix of range and knock down power but they also seem like they're about a buck a shot to fire ... I am new and probably don't know good places (yet) to look for ammo... and could really use some help here. Thanks!

For a semi-auto, you can pick up a decent SKS for three hundred bucks give or take. I just checked and you can find ammunition for it (7.62x39) for as low as twenty cents a round. It will shoot cheap Russian steel case ammo all day long.

If you want to go really cheap, get a Mosin Nagant. It's a bolt action, but you can get one for under a hundred bucks. Ammunition (7.62x54R) costs about the same.

Thanks for the reply! I actually should have changed the rounds I was looking at . I was looking at the 7.62x39 but that's more for AK47s and like you mentioned SKS and from what I'm reading they aren't the most accurate rounds/rifles.

Is there something in one of the other rounds I listed that you like that could be budget friendly at the range? I would love to find a cheap source for 6.8 SPC.

Well for cheap ammo, HD and decent at the range/plinking you want to stick to 7.62x39, 5.45x39 and 5.56/.223. Compare the ballistics and the rifles that shoot them and pick the winner (for you). Really you should have at least two of the three.

6.8 SPC and cheap don't go in the same sentence together.

My buddy bought an AK74 and got 1000 rounds for about $150 from Cheaper Than Dirt - America's Ultimate Shooting Sports Discounter

There are several issues with this post.
First of all the requirements mentioned would be hard to fill as stated.
6.8 SPC is not cheap
6.8 SPC is not readily available in any bulk quantities
And certainly not in a real inexpensive rifle
You could buy a Mosin Nagant Rifle. They are very inexpensive and the ammunition 7.62 X 54 is reasonable and readily available in quantity. And fun to shoot.
The AK or the SKS is another good choice in 7.62X39 due to ammunition cost and availability in quantity.
Regarding accuracy! You will only get military type accuracy regarding your general requirements of an inexpensive rifle and ammunition. If you want great accuracy you are going to have to step up to the AR-15 level. And in 5.56 NATO/223 Remington!
Good Luck on your choice!
