If you become interested in the Mini 30, my two fairly new metal (blued and ss) Promag 10-rounders have had only a few misfeeds (really rare) in about 600+ rounds.
Aftermarket mags are often the curse of both Mini 14s and Mini 30s, but some are much better than the rest.

My wobbly polymer 30-round Promag ('08) never misfed in the old Mini 14.
This old Mini 14 was as reliable, maybe more so than a buddy's WASR 'AK', and he only used about 80 rounds that day....

I could be wrong, I'm not a hunter, but I recall that MD has a ft-lbs minimum for deer hunting. I think it was 1250, which eliminates most 223's and most commercial 7.62 x 39's

The SKS is a good first military rifle. Also, the unmodified Saigas in X39 and .223 are great.

Corncod's advice, on second thought, is also very good.

A Norinco SKS (chrome-lined bore) and a chunk of ammo is probably the best value for you hard-earned cash.
The Russian is generally considered the best SKS, and lists for about $400-450 at some gun shows last spring here in Memphis.

My N. SKS does not have the extra weight/fwd. center-of-gravity due to the grenade launcher, which hinders almost all Yugo SKS rifles.
I'm all out of grenades....
Now cleaning mine (Hoppe's #9) after shattering a few bricks this afternoon.

Default Saiga Option

Saiga builds a series of weapons that are well within your budget, generally being available in the $300-$400 range. They come chambered in a series of different rounds from 223 to 7.62x51 (NATO), to 7.62x39, to 7.62x54 and more. They are essentially AK's without a pistol grip. They are very popular here in CA since we can't have an AK with both a removable magazine and a pistol grip.

Get what suits you the best. My personal preference is the AR-15 style. I've shot both the AR and the AK, and quite honestly the AR just feels more comfortable in my hands. I never really liked the feel of the SKS, although SKS is a less expensive weapon than an AR or AK. But if you want the best, get an M14. Like the guy said above me, Saiga builds some nice rifles. You can get almost any different combination.

I thought ones with pistol grips and detachable magazines were legal now that the Assault Weapons Ban expired in 2004? Then again, because of all the gang members running around like they're tough, they take them away from everyone including law-abiding citizens. Are they going to make pencils and pens illegal too beacuse those can be used as weapons? I could throw a tv at somebody and injure them just as bad as if I shot them with a gun.

Where ya been? CA has enhanced laws. The same goes with every state. While state laws cannot supercede federal law, they can go above and beyond. Too bad you fall on the other side, otherwise you would know this.
