DefaultWhat rifle should I get.

Here's the deal, I'm looking for a semiautomatic rifle and the most I can spend is probably about $500-600

Preferably magazine fed and can hold no more than 20 rounds (I live in Maryland)

General purpose I guess.
*legal to hunt with(not necesarily good to hunt with)
*Magazine fed
*20 round magazine
*Easy to find ammunition
*500-600 dollars
*Can be used for home defense
*pistol grip

Really the only ones I can think of are the Mini-14

Well, if you want a .223, there's also the Kel Tec SU 16 which is a neat little rig. You may be able to find a surplus M1 carbine for your price if you're really lucky, but a Universal carbine is quite likely at that price.

If you want more firepower, the Remington 740, 742, 7400 series of rifles will get you into .270 or .30-06. There are ten round aftermarket mags made for them.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Somebody else should be around in a while and give you some more input.

BTW, a pistol grip equipped rifle like a FAL or AR type will cost you more money.

Good luck.

Dangit! The SKS completely slipped my mind. That could fit the bill, buy some ammunition and still have a few bucks left over.

Nahh, I already got a .22 rifle, and that Mk4/M14 thing is wayy over my budget.
I'm looking for something with a bit more stopping power.

I'm leaning toward a Yugo SKS or a Mini-14 if I can get one cheap enough.

I liked the Yugo sks that I bought. Cheep and reliable. At one time we could say ammo was prevalent and cheep, but that is not an accurate statement in todays time.
