Yes, it would be the AR-15, preferably with a monolithic upper like LMT so you don't need the forward mount for optics. Pmags, 68-77 grain quality ammo like Black Hills. But even with 77 grain, I'd want more...

The 6.8spc would be a great upgrade to the extent that it becomes more widely accepted, however by that time hopefully the field of 308's get sorted out, too. Like LMT's current $2,500 gun. I like the 6.8, but still prefer the 308. Really oughta be standardized with the p-mags, too, so that also includes DPMS if it is good to go (I'd have GAP go over it with a fine toothed comb before heading to the field), or KAC if you have bank.

Also, the post-modern FN SCAR and Rem/Bush/Magpul ACR may be very strong contenders within the near future. LWRC REPR is already here and may be sorted out by now. These will include pistons and side chargers...and should be pretty accurate as well.

layton:

Some German Special Forces recently trained at a private jump school way out east of Memphis.
It was on the front page of the (east Shelby County version) Commercial Appeal newspaper!

The "Kampfschwimmer"/"Combat Swimmers" stayed in a motel, and the article even stated where they preferred to eat and drink. It said that they never found a Bier they did not like to trinken. It was not very clear to me whether they had been allowed to participate in "Kampf" in Afghanistan.

Their Durst for any Bier might have been caused by 12-mile walks/runs to the airstrip, where they jumped above 15,000' from a King Air turboprop, owned by an 'interesting gentleman'.

Another vote for the SKS-I've never had an AR.
Despite just acquiring a first Garand, the SKS and Enfield Jungle Carbine are much lighter/handier and just as fun-especially when you have to carry them around in hot weather.

You got that right about the FN FAL, but people seem to forget some other great rifles that ARE NOT AR or AK. There is the Galil, Styer, HK, Cetme and a whole list of different rifles.

Believe it or not some are even bolt action. Enfields, Mauser, M1903's or hey even a good old fashion Lever action .30-30 can be a good modern day militia rifle.

Depending on where you live will also help you decide on what you should get.

For the Peoples Demokratick Republik of Kalifornia(totally joking about the name, please dont take it personal or get hacked off),I think an SKS,with its fixed magazine is a good option.

I would stay away from my favorite flavor of SKS there -the Yugo M59-66A1- because it has some seriously 'evil features' like a bayonet and that NATO spec 22mm rifle grenade launcher complete with the totally despicably evil grenade launching sight..........

I would think if you found a 'sporter' model of SKS,without the bayonet or a flash hider of any kind, and wearing its original fixed 10 round magazine-you'd have no trouble from the politburo there.

SKS rifles were rumored to have been used by Spetsnaz as a form of close support/designated marksman rifle, and are actually quite accurate for the caliber. They debuted in WW2 actually-and were tested on a limited basis on the Eastern Front. While not as rock solid reliable or nearly as prolific as the AK design, the SKS has seen battle in many conflicts post-WW2 from Korea and Vietnam to the civil wars in Eastern Europe.

It is a battle tested design that will serve you well.

Here is a cool link on the SKS-
1945 SKS Siminov (7.62x39)

You could do alot worse than an SKS set up with rear peep sights from Techsights, and maybe a bit of glass as your 'primary' sighting system.

Tech-SIGHTS Precision Shooting Accessories

I had that sight system on my Yugo-and was pleased to get a bit more accuracy from the rifle.

That's actually a very good rifle for the OPs needs. Inexpensive, reliable, accurate (enough) and pretty easy to find. I didn't think a whole lot of them until I got one a while back. It's one of my favorite rifles to shoot these days.

Drumjunkie has what I think is a good point. Get an SKS for a SHTF gun. No offense to the AR clan, but I always thought .30 cal was as small as an assault rifle should go.

The SKS is still very cheap, (you can buy three of them for the price of one AR-15), and while its not as cheap as it once was, 7.62x39 is available just about everywhere.

While I like the AK, my personal experience has been that the SKS is more accurate (Yugoslav SKS's seem the best).

And if you've the mind, you can modify it to whatever trips your trigger.

The only drawback to the SKS ...IMO is that under stress... reloading/changing mags/stripper clips..etc.... quickly...might be a issue?
As far as a reliable firing platform...there is nothing wrong with it.

You are looking for a semiautomatic, CA legal, SHTF/militia rifle to fill a few roles

Not knowing your budget, I would recomend the following..
http://www.lrbarms.com/m14rifles.html

exact build would look like this..

1. Criterion 18.5in chrome lined bbl. (22in if more muzzle velocity is desired and the OAL of 44in is not a factor for you.)
2. Either an M14SA rec with ARMS#18, or Basset mount, or M25 rec along with the extended rail.
3. SEI gas lock front sight (hooded), and Vortex direct connect flash hider. ( In your case, a CA legal muzzle brake.
4. Synthetic USGI stock with adjustable comb.
5. Built by LRB,or SEI.
6. Good quality magazines, such as the current CMI.
7. SEI,or Sadlak extended mag release.

Some decent alternates include the M1A Bush/Scout rifle..

Or better yet, a rifle built to similar specs using a different receiver, such as a FA, AC, FO, PT, or NorincoM14S, such as this one....

Note: This rifle cost me less than the M1A-A1 pictured above it did.
Reasons:

1. I prefer 7.62x51mm/308 for hunting med to large game, especially for distances of over 200yds.
2. There's already enough intermediate caliber rifle totin folks to do all the "room clearing", but if it did, I would use "other" methods to do this, and have trained to do this with an M14 at work regardless. My tactics would not involve much of that. Better for me to keep at a distance if at all possible. Also has a better ability to reduce cover and penetrate body armor.
3. The rifle is very reliable under less than ideal conditions, and provides plenty of precision for the role of SDM, as long as the person behind it can.
4. Re-supply from "liberated" ammo would not be a big concern of mine, as I believe there would also be "liberated" rifles/other equipment as well
5. Plenty of upgrades for this rifle if I wanna do something different.

The extra weight of ammo as compared to intermediate caliber rifle/ammo weights is worth it for me at least.

Whatever you decide upon, I would suggest that you learn your rifle inside and out, learn or keep good shooting habits, and buy enough ammo to keep said skills up to snuff.
One last thing that you dont hear alot about, but is very important overall...... Physical conditioning and health. I cant stress this enough. Unlike a rifle, you are stuck with your body, so maintaining said body should be of high priority.

The Mini 14 is legal in the PRK. Just dont take it out with hi cap mags. Stock mods can make it illegal. Buy your mini in the PRK and take a trip to AZ to buy mags. People from CA cant buy guns in AZ. They have to be shipped to an FFL in CA and on the legal list.
I am trying to get info on the Benelli MR1 and I understand it is legal in the PRK also.
In AZ I can walk into a gun shop and walk out with a gun.
