In Shihan's pictuee, you can see the gas block on the top of the barrel. It covers a small hole (gas port) bored into the barrel. The gas tube fits over the rear of the gas block, and contains the piston that is driven by gas from the bore. Piston slaps other parts, driving them to the rear to operate the action.
