I say get the arsenal in 5.56. You can totally put optics all over the thing. The m1a isn't the best home defense gun. Kinda huge and .308 isn't the round I wanna be firing in the house. Nor is the 5.56 but that's my choice of what you listed.

I've seen most of them. The ones from Midwest Industries are nice, but that's about it. Pretty much all the side mounts I've seen leave the optic too high for my tastes, receiver and gas tube mounted optics aren't secure enough for me, and even the MI hand guard rail has some downfalls, mostly weight is what I don't like about it. I know it's not all that heavy, but the weight is right out on the end of the rifle, where the weight will feel the heaviest, plus you're stuck with either red dots, or IER scopes.

In my opinion, the only optic mount worth having the Micro Mount from MI that replaces the rear sight.

I went w/ the MI mount for the reasons listed above, it looks better too.

There is a place making mounts the utalize the side mount that sit just as low as the one pictured above. I can't recall the companies name but it's RSK-something or other.

New member, but this thread is interesting as I have an SLR-95 in 7.62 and an M1A scout. Both great guns, but I'll take my youth/ladies Daily 20ga with "special" loads for home defense. My opinion only, of course.

I understand the over penetration issues of both the 556 and 762 in the domestic environment, but I live alone. No, the primary purpose of these rifles has nothing to do with home defense, but shtf I expect to be able to grab it and be effective. I have a very nice coach gun for the good ole homestead.

Ah, understood. Perhaps the M1A would be my choice, then.
