I didn't know we needed a reason to own something.

I'm just wondering if i need one or if i just want one.

As far as Home Defense, 12ga would be better i think.

I would agree. However, I don't "need" most of the stuff I buy anyways, I buy it cause I want it. Hence the boat, bike, expensive truck, etc.

Walk around your house. I'm sure you can find all sorts of things that you don't NEED. More still, if your married. I'd love to have a full auto Tommy Gun. But I certainly don't NEED one.
As for home defense use, fraught with all sorts of different issues.
Your local prosecutor might decide that it was some sort of malicious overkill, "You Monster! You shot that poor (18yo) child 25 times! He was just turning his life around..."
Also considering that one will very likely be into full auto gun for well north of $10K, I don't think I would like seeing it confiscated as evidence. Even when found innocent of any wrongdoing, how many LE agencies in this day & age are going to be pleased with just handing it back to you? People with less... controversial guns sometimes have a heck of a time getting them back.

Open the Machine Gun Registry back up and the price of full auto weapons would be forced to drop as they are no longer pre-ban and rare, that would greatly help in ownership.

On point of need versus want.

You need air, water, food and sleep.

You may want to have only the freshest air, cleanest water, Filet Mignon at every meal, a king size bed with 1200 thread count sheets and "female of your choice" to share it with.

I don't need a full auto Tommy Gun in .45 acp and 100 round drum mag. But there should be no legislation or government interaction stopping me from making that purchase should I decide to do so.

Pistol cartridges, believe it or not, do have advantages over intermediate and full cartridges. Less recoil, and in many cases more damage at close range. Plus, the ability to have a rifle in the same caliber as your pistol is an undeniable advantage, especially if they use the same magazine.

Your question could be asked of any type of firearm though.

They all have a purpose, even if that purpose is just fun.

How about another point on why someone would own a Semi-auto subgun/carbine. Just about every subgun match (where people shoot to win - Trophies, prizes, etc) have different classes for semi vs FullAuto. Saying that if you want to compete and can't afford a FA subgun, you can still compete.

I've seen 9mm AR's, Sumio M31's, etc. Just another reason to own one.

When police and military have them and just might oneday point them at us. It behooves the law-abiding citizens to par up. If one doubts the possibility of this, simply examine what the NDAA bill signed and made law by Barack Obama really, truly portends.

Remember, i'm not counting fun as a reason. That would go true for nearly any firearm.

Thompson in .45 would be awesome to have for collector and nostalgia and possibly even an investment.
Bretta Cx4 Storm ... ?

Maybe I'm thinking along the lines of if someone is to buy their first gun,
Is it practical for for a first/only gun? In my list of types to own, it is the last on my list to collect.

Here is my list in order:

  1. 12 ga Shotgun
  2. Pistol
  3. Rifle (or Carbine)
  4. ... more of the above
  5. pistol-caliber carbine

Completely impractical just for fun list
  1. Bow
  2. Cross-bow
  3. Black powder rifle or pistol

I have a .45 CX-4 Storm standing by in the Master BR. But I typically have at least one handgun that is easier to access fast. The CX-4 is a lot of fun. Accurate & reliable as well. However one could safely argue that they are overpriced.
