Default Sub Machine Gun, why have one?

What is the purpose of a personal/civilian sub machine gun *Pistol Caliber Carbines*?

Excluding fun...
Why would an individual buy a sub machine gun *Pistol Caliber Carbines*?
I'm speaking legally so it can't be full-auto. (*w/o permits/tax stamps)

I think legally you can own a FA with the proper paperwork. I would like to have one to say I have one. It would go through a lot of ammo really fast and could get expensive.

I don't understand the question.

Are you asking why a law abiding citizen, with money they earned by working hard, would want to spend that money on an Inalienable Right within this great land to own a weapon platform that is on par with that used by the military?

Because that question doesn't make sense either.....

my answer covers full auto.

because police and military have them. thats the only reason needed. they should be readily available and cost no more than the semi auto ones

It's kinda like asking why does someone buy a car that can go 145 mph when 65 is the fastest you can drive in NY is 65?

If its not full auto it's not a sub machine gun, it's a pistol caliber carbine. Someone might want that as a handy home defense weapon, an emergency long arm to pair with a sidearm in the same caliber, or a less expensive (than rifle caliber) plinker or target gun.

As for why one would want an actual SMG maybe for self defense? Fun? Interest in historical military weapons?

You are asking one question and changin the parameters before you are done. By definition, a Submachine gun is full auto. To call a pistol caliber carbine an SMG is like calling an AR-15 an Assault Rifle. Two different animals entirely.

Submachine guns are NOT illegal in most states. As long as the NFA paperwork is completed and Federal Tax stamp obtained, they are PERFECTLY legal!

Why own an SMG? They are fun, nostalgic, and fun. They SHOULD be legal.

Why owna pistol caliber carbine? They are fun, notalgic and more affordable than the full auto cousins.

Mdauben & Robocop10mm,

I didn't realize they were called "pistol caliber carbines". I learned something new today.

Agreed! but, the SMG isn't the topic (I know tax stamps and permits... the semi-auto is for the 99% of us)

Per your points for Pistol Caliber Carbines
  • Fun
  • Nostalgic / historical
  • Affordable
  • Caliber matching (affordability/comparability)

So a pistol caliber carbine is or isn't a good/the best for
- home defense?
- Sport?
- Hunting?

Home defense? Why not? The higher velocity (from most ammo) can make a pistol cartridge more effective.
Sport? What kind of sport? For informal plinking they are fun. Recoil is mild and muzzle blast is less severe than in 5.56
Hunting? Maybe small game like rabbits and rats, sure.

LE entry teams have all but abandoned the SMG for their work. Over penetration is more likely than with a frangible 5.56 and effectiveness on target is greatly reduced. The only common application for the SMG's is with suppressors.
