remington 742 30-06 springfield

Well I was looking at a semi auto rifle (chamberd in 30-06) and I came across a 742 BDL (7400)Woodmaster Deluxe with a Monte Carlo Basket Weave stock going for $280. I havent gone down to the store to look at her yet but I called in to see what kind of condition it was in he said very good. I have heard stories about jamming and some about them being perfect guns. My son will be using this rifle for deer season next year if I get it. I want to know as much as i can on this rifle, except the problems with the bolt waring the rail down cause that will be the first thing i check on that gun.

I would HIGHLY recommend you shoot the rifle in advance of buying it if possible, or get assurance of being able to return it if it turns out to be a lemon. Honestly I don't think you can go wrong at that price. Even if it malfunctions or produces poor accuracy, it can be fixed. I've had dozens of the 740/742/7400 brought in to the shop over the years, so if you need any tips, let me know.

Do you think he would give a warenty on the gun? and how long would it be?

One of the main problems is the extractor. It is relatively weak. If the chamber gets rusty/pitted the extractor is not strong enough to do its intended job. If the chamber is clean and smooth the rifle should be OK

Stay clear of reloaded ammunition. I blew the bolt out of a 742 30-06 on the first reloaded bullet I tried. Although, back then I wasn't reloading for myself so I not sure what went wrong except it blew up a week before deer season. I guess I'm just a little jittery when it comes to 742's.
