Hello, I'm new to the forums and new to the gun world.

I have a crazy idea but I'll need your expertise! I plan on bisecting a gun in half lengthwise so I could place it into a display case as art. And I was wondering:

1. What type of rifle is the most popular in the US gun world? Or what [affordable] gun would you like hung on your wall? (I was thinking the M4 because I feel its the iconic American gun. Although I could be completely wrong)
2. What should I look for to purchase this gun?

Welcome to ftf. The AR is a good choice but awfully pricey for an art piece. I'm not gonna just jump in and recommend a gun I'm just gonna suggest you get very familiar with whatever you choose before you start cutting. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks mountainman. I was told centerfire AR is better than rimfire so that's a start. What should I look for whenever I browse for these rifles? Because they don't seem to say "centerfire" or "rimfire" in the names.

Whatever gun it is, I'll have to choose soon because I've been reading that prices are increasing

Unless it is a .22 caliber it will be your standard centerfire AR. You might be able to find one in the $700 range if you look for a used smith and Wesson or windham weaponry. If that's too expensive something like a nagant might be cool and can be had for around $100. It's not really an American gun but they are pretty popular.

The $700 range is perfect. Not too low, not too high. Is it usually cheaper to buy them in parts or as a whole? Because I might have to disassemble the AR first to make the machine cutting easier.

I am so sad right now. I don't have $700.00 to spend on a weapon I want to own to shoot let alone one to cut in half to display as art.

Depends where you are. In my state its usually cheaper to buy the gun in most It's cheaper to buy in parts. If you're looking for cheap as possible though you're gonna want a used gun. So you don't want to buy it in parts. We can direct you in how to disassemble if need be.

Why don't you contact a manufacture (or several), tell them what you want to do and see if they will sell you an inert piece, or cut one for you?

Not a bad idea. You might be able to convince them it could lead to sales.
