Well, I know some shops around my area sold SA Garands for under $700 new. I'm sure I can find one if I try hard enough.

Orlando accurately stated that a Correct grade or Select grade from CMP is as close to a new original Garand as you can get.

If you can afford both, good for you. Enjoy!
Well, I am currently on the Dave Ramsey plan for my finances (I am a poor, jobless grad student after all), but don't worry one day I will own one of each.

Check the CMP auction site for "new" M1's. Occasionally they have unissued still in the wrapper M1's for auction. Of course take out a loan for it. If memory serves it went for over 10k.

Quite impressive.

I envy you in so many ways now.

See here is the reason why I want two Garands with one being from CMP and the other from SA. The SA one I'd use for general shooting, while the CMP one like yours I would keep simply as a collector's item. Mark my words though, I will get a CMP Garand some day along with a SA one and a SA M1A too.

Skip the commercial Sprignfield Garand. If you want a shooter get a Service or Field Grade from CMP, less than $600.00
A commercial Garand will only go down in value from the day you buy it but a USGI Garand will only increase. Just my opinion
