Moving to black rifle...which one?

My collection is mostly shotguns and I am thinking of getting my first black rifle. I am looking for something that I can shoot a lot and have some fun outfitting. Any suggestions? I am thinking of going with a .223 caliber model but open to any other thoughts on that too.

You know .223 with modding capabilities screams AR 15.

This has come up before, but you won't go wrong with Rock River Arms, Stag Arms, Bushmaster, Armalite or S&W.

I recommend a chrome-lined barrel with a 1:9 twist. Make sure your receiver is chambered for NATO 5.56.

Once you get the base platform, you can modify it over time easily with new rails, sights, grips, stocks, etc.

I have two Rock River AR's. The fit and finish on both is great. I don't need one of those rubber spacers. The top one is completely RR stock with an EO Tech sight on it. The bottom one is a RR upper and lower with different components, and a third party barrel. If you do your homework, you can build up a very nice rifle for less money than you can buy the whole thing :)

Thanks for all the replies. I have been going over the rock river site was leaning towards them. Still need to do some more research. Last weekend I shot a fulton armory 223 and the HK94 which is a 9mm. Had fun with both! I really like the HK (own a few handguns from them) just not the price. Plus I think the 9mm round might not be the best for 100yrd shooting.

THoughts? Sorry for all the questions. I only have two hunting rifles so I have many pertaining to black rifles.

Jay - - I really like those RR ones, especially the bottom one. Looks like it would be a blast to shoot.

That one is an excellent shooter. It has a Kreiger 20" stainless barrel with a 1:7 twist...... Badger Ordinance free-floated handguard...... a Jewell trigger...... and a 6X18 mildot scope. See, the AR's are sort of like the center fire version of the Ruger 10-22...... there's a huge array of accessories out there, and you can get as exotic as you want. :)

I've got a RRA also - 16" stainless w/1:8 twist, two-stage trigger, YHM rail w/integrated gas block & flip up front/rear sights, winter trigger guard, PRI gas buster charging handle, EoTech 551, vertical foregrip, 6-pos. buttstock w/cheek piece, XS tritium stripe front post, ERGO grip ... It's also threaded with a Phantom flash hider that also acts as the quick attach for my AAC M4-2000 suppressor. Shooting w/the suppressor it sounds pretty much like a .22 rifle and is just about hearing safe w/o muffs. I'm still tweaking it for 68 gr. BTHP.

Take a look at the guns from DPMS. Well made and reasonably priced.
