Sorry folks I'm new to forums I'm still trying to figure it all out (not too techno-literate lol). Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm Gona go ahead with most of your advice and build my new AR. Two purpose driven uppers and a single lower. That being said does anybody have any advice for what kind of uppers I should go for? NOTE: I live in the hell-hole known to the normal world as California.

welcome back! stick around and head over to the Introductions Section and say hello to everyone. glad to have you aboard.

but if you were willing to spend $2000 on one, you could possibly build two really high quality AR's for that amount of money. much better bang for your buck, pardon the pun!

another suggestion, check out some of the stickys in the AR section of the forum. lots of good information by some really knowledgeable folks here on the forum and don't be afraid to ask questions. there is in excess of 50,000 members here on this forum. someone knows something about anything gun related here on this forum. good group of people here too.

Buy a .308 HB Remington 700 and a scope. Pick up Mossberg 12 Ga. Pump. Then when your shopping is done set down. You should have enough left for a beer and a tequila shooter.

Ok just make shur that when you get the lower you specifically ask for CA legal. I know that PSA has a lower build kit that's calli legal. Oh and order a few 10 rd hunting mags when you get the lower. Should take care of any future Komifornia mag limit legal issues.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/ca-compliant/complete-classic-lower-ca-model-no-magazine.html

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/lower-parts/magazines/ar-15-223-5-56/magpul-pmag-10-ar-m4-gen-m3-5-56x45-magazine-mag559-blk.html

As far as the uppers look for a 16" barrel mid length gas system for your self defense upper. Mid length is smoother than carbine length. Try to get one with the flash hider pinned/welded to make calli happy. Handguards, free float tubes or quad rails are whatever floats your boat. Optics on this style rifle, hard to go wrong with reddot and backup iron sights. Or an a2 front sight tower , no bayonet lug(calli again) and the reddot and an mbus folding rear site behind it. This can be set up to cowitness. Buy sights for each upper, don't try to swap back and forth. More trouble than its worth, site it in and leave it attatched.

The precision upper, I personally use Wilson barrels 20-24" with a free float handguard, a bipod, Lopro gas block and a flat top upper. A fixed compensator or a plain target crowned barrel are best here and will make calli happy. Most of my varmit rifles are chambered in 223 wylde, this allows both 223 and 556 ammo to be used. Scopes, 4-16x40 minimum for distance work. More is better here, you can never have too much optic at long range. A +20 moa scope mount system if you intend to only use it at long range. I use 12x32-56 30mm tube Leopold myself for long range varmit hunting. Bought it used off on unlimited BR shooter at camp perry for $600, much higher new. My rifle weighs in at 14 lbs with a 22" varmit barrel and busts prairie rats at 500 yds regularly with good ammo.

Bolt and charging handle, get a carpenter 158 bolt, that's the milspec. Coated or plated are good, this is the heart of the rifle, extra spent here is never wasted! ~$100 on sale at PSA basic bolt, ~$225 for a Failzero plated national match bolt and carrier. Handle, try a few and see what you like. I use the Raptor ambi handles on most of my builds, everyone likes it. About $90 its not outrageously expensive, but stock goes less than $20.

Nothing quite like my personal rifle upper on the site. PM me if your interested and ill email you links for where I got my build parts. Too long a list to do from my phone. :eek

Those links should get you started, most are out of stock right now. I pulled them as a type suggestion, not looking at status. That's all they are, a starting point. I expect to take some heat from the PSA haters for the all PSA building suggestions. Maybe AgenTiki will give you some ideas, he's from Callie and knows the laws well. I'm sure everyone else will chime in with their ideas.

No problem, we all had to start somewhere. Most of us here see this as paying it forward for everyone who helped us out.
